National Pride or Bigotry?

A friend on Facebook just posted a meme with their national flag and the words:

(full swear words used in the original post)

This was posted under the banner of national pride. I get national pride and I understand and agree with to a large extent the sentiments of “if you don’t like it here, go home”, but this crosses the line. It is not national pride, it is bigotry, plain and simple. The actions of the minority of hard line Muslims that want things like Sharia law implemented are being used to brand all Muslims, the vast majority of which, just want to live a peaceful existence as do the rest of us. How would most Christians like to be branded by the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church.

This attitude is along the same lines as Nazi Germany wanting the Jews out. They started by just wanting them kicked out and then progressed on to genocide. Are these the people we want to be likened to? Certainly I don’t. By the same token, I’m not a bleeding heart that is willing to change the way I live because it doesn’t hold with their ideals. If you want Sharia law, go live in a country that has it, if you want to marry multiple wives, go live in a country that allows polygamy. We live in a country where people are allowed to pursue their own happiness as long as they obey the law. If you accept those conditions then you are welcome here. If not, go live somewhere that will allow you to live the way you want.

No matter what though, there is no place for bigotry and hate here. Every one is given a chance and every individual should be treated on their own merits. We are made richer by the diversity in our culture. Weed out the troublemakers, sure, but don’t brand an entire part of the community by the actions of a few.
